Yoruichi Shihōin (四楓院 夜一 Shihōin Yoruichi?) is an old friend of Urahara Shop owner Kisuke Urahara, and so uses it as a place of residence when she is not abroad. When first introduced, she helps Ichigo and his friends infiltrate Soul Society. As the series progress, it is revealed that Yoruichi is a former captain of the 2nd Division, head of the noble Shihōin clan, and was the Commander in Chief of the Secret Mobile Corps. Therefore, she is highly knowledgeable in Soul Society's history due to her background as a leader of one of the four highest ranking noble families. According to a citation from Kisuke Urahara when he explained to Hiyori Sarugaki, any squad captain in the Gotei 13 who has had the Secret Mobile Corps under his or her control (usually 2nd Squad) will be a formidable military force in Soul Society. As Yoruichi was the leader of the Secret Mobile Corps and also a squad captain herself during the pendulum period and also a leader of a high ranking noble house, it has made her position in the Soul Society as one of the most intimidating and respected. A century before the start of the series she abandoned all of her military and noble house positions by helping Urahara, Tessai Tsukabishi, and the visoreds escape to the human world.
Character Personality: Yoruichi was born and bred to be the princess of the Shihouin family, and became accustomed to her position very quickly. She possesses the confidence that a leader needs to make which enables her to execute decisions swiftly and wisely, and seems to naturally inspire her subordinates. She commands respect without demanding it, and has many connections as a result.
She also displays a high level of intelligence. While she might not work at Urahara's level of science and revolutionary technology, her skills are primarily directed towards combat. Yoruichi is a tactician, able to look at situations with unclouded judgment, and render the best possible solution. She's not the sort of person who would jump blindly into danger, always proceeding with caution and cool intellect. Of course, impulsive people like Ichigo tend to upset her plans, which rouses her anger. And she's not above smacking/scratching someone for not listening to her when it's important. If that's what it takes to get the point across, so be it.
While she may be a strict taskmistress, Yoruichi isn't above having a little fun now and again if she can afford it. She enjoys the rare opportunities she receives to stretch out, or sprawl, and enjoy some comfort food (usually milk). She also likes indulging in a hot bath. But all things come in moderation. She rests when she needs to, relaxes when there's ample opportunity, and never slacks off when there's a job to be done.
Some might mistake Yoruichi's mischievous mannerisms as flirting, but this isn't the case. She enjoys teasing, but romance isn't an ideal she readily entertains. She's just...a woman who's very comfortable with her body. Very, very comfortable. She has no qualms about modesty or lack thereof, and even chides others who do. Admittedly, she does enjoy seeing others over-react, and on occasion she'll do something with the sole intention of flustering another. The more straight-laced and stuffy a person is, the more likely Yoruichi is to target them for a spot of fun.
When Yoruichi commits herself, she can't be shaken. This not only applies to goals and principles, but to people as well. She shows an amazing amount of loyalty to Kisuke Urahara, of whom she was spoken of as his 'best friend.' They played together as children and grew up with a rich understanding of one another. The two are virtually inseparable in mind, heart, and soul. There may even be love, but it's not the kind exemplified in a typical romance; they don't hold hands, or gaze absently into one another's eyes. They're diehard partners who earnestly enjoy one another's company. The things that Urahara believes in are the same things that Yoruichi will fight to uphold at ANY cost.
Due to her upbringing, Yoruichi is very well-spoken. Her manner of speech is polite, and she makes no sounds of hesitation such as 'um' or 'er'. If she's at a loss for words, she won't speak until she knows what she wants to say, precisely and without stammering. As a negotiator, she's exceptional, for she knows the language of both highborn and lowborn, able to accomodate either status.
But even as a noblewoman, Yoruichi was never content to sit still and play a regal role. She's always been fiercely independent, with a stubborn, headstrong will of her own. In court, she preferred to slouch or recline in her seat, giving the room a very casual air when being addressed by her retainers. She wanted them to feel at ease when they were around her, displaying a fun-loving affection to others.
The more serious someone was, the more Yoruichi liked to tease them into loosening up. She shared a very sisterly sort of bond with Soi Fong in particular, and shows great care with those who follow her leadership. And yet, there's a carefully maintained distance put in place as well. While she may care for others, they aren't always her first priority, which can give others a shallow or fickle sort of impression. It would be incorrect; she truly does care. But her methods of showing that care are subdued, and not always easily seen.
Freedom is something that Yoruichi treasures a great deal. Even as the head of the Shihouin clan, she had a sense of being caged in duty. It was something she could leave behind without regret when Urahara was exiled; following him was all she wanted to do. Even clothes feel restricting to her, and if she had her way, she'd go without whenever she pleased.
This may be why she prefers to travel about in cat form. Being a cat has many, many advantages! It gives her the freedom to move about wherever she likes without arousing suspicion or interference. As a cat, she's also privy to the information others spill. Some people are surprisingly loose-lipped around cats. She's still able to use the majority of her powers as a cat as well. But best of all, no one screams or freaks out if she's not wearing any clothes.

It was too much temptation to resist. Soi Fon was one of those people who were easily flustered and high-strung, and like magnets, opposites attracted. Yoruichi was laid back and casual. No one seemed able to push her buttons, just because there were no buttons to push. But for those delightful types who had so very many buttons, Yoruichi sought them out to push as many as possible. Why? Who knew how Yoruichi's mind worked?
Part of it was due to selfish entertainment, she'd freely admit that. It was fun~ But she also enjoyed seeing young people grow, being comfortable with who they were and learning to live full lives. Soi Fon had certainly progressed a great deal in that sense, and Yoruichi was honestly proud of the tiny captain. The second division couldn't have been in better hands.
It was there that she now raced, communicator still in hand, knowing that Soi Fon probably still had hers on as well. She picked out that unique little cluster of buzzing reiatsu, much like a hornet's nest that had not yet been upset, and streaked straight for it. Trees did not hinder her. Neither did the officers who started with Yoruichi's passing, glancing around themselves sharply as she gusted past them faster than they could blink. She made a beeline straight for the captain, and before Soi Fon could fully deliver her next response, Yoruichi rocketed bodily into her.
